In the UK, public health studentships are usually funded by one of the seven Research Councils in the form of Research Council grants. Other sources of funding include universities, charitable organisations and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
Public Health is a broad multi-disciplinary subject. Therefore PhDs may be in a number of other 'related' subjects, such as health psychology, behavioural science, human geography, demography and medicine.
