Senior Public Health Officer - BLACHIR

Job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated programme manager to drive the implementation of Birmingham's actions arising from the Birmingham and Lewisham African Caribbean Health Inequalities Review (BLACHIR). This is a full-time position in our Public Health Inequalities Team until 31 March 2024, which can be offered on a secondment basis or as a fixed term contract.

The public health function is an important contributor to this vision through the continual championing of the health and wellbeing of all citizens across the city, but especially those experiencing inequalities.

This position is an opportunity to play a key role in high-profile ground-breaking work which aims to tackle inequality and address racism and discrimination in our health and care systems. More about BLACHIR can be found HERE .

This post sits in the Inequalities Team within the Wider Determinants of Health and Wellbeing section of the Public Health Division. We have a dynamic and diverse programme, including discrimination health, poverty, inclusion health and clinical health inequalities. Our work involves stakeholders across our partnerships to improve health and wellbeing, including Council directorates, the Integrated Care System and the third sector.

The Role

The key focus of the role is to:
develop and drive the delivery of the BLACHIR implementation plan
establish and manage a multi-stakeholder oversight board for the project
develop a mechanism for managing and reporting the project progress and impact, including commissioning an independent evaluation
ensure that all project activities are underpinned by the principles of co-production and
engagement with the Black African and Black Caribbean communities in Birmingham.

Skills & Experience

The role will involve using your public health and managerial skills to work in partnership across organizational boundaries to embed the outcomes from the review into wider agendas.

This is an ideal opportunity for somebody who:
has a substantial experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in reducing health inequalities
understands the role that the health and wellbeing board, ICS and other partners can play to improve health and wellbeing and tackle health inequalities affecting Black and Ethnic Minority populations
understands and can develop/ use public health research, data and evidence to influence system leaders and partners and implement change
has substantial experience of developing and coordinating the delivery of major health and wellbeing change projects/ programmes in complex and challenging environments
has strong people management skills and experience in developing staff through both formal and informal opportunities
has strong written and verbal communication skills and substantial experience in writing programme plans and partnership strategies
able to learn and adapt and can make a confident start in this role quickly.
