Ireland’s Public Health Service has embarked on a programme of strategic structural reform to implement an enhanced, consultant-delivered model of service delivery aligned to international best practice. The new model will radically change the governance and operating structure within the Health Service Executive (HSE) Public Health function, establish strong clinical leadership across each of the domains of Public Health practice, and strategically align the service to contribute effectively to major service design, policy implementation, reduction in inequalities and improvements in health.
Six Area Directors of Public Health will be appointed to lead each of the six Public Health Area’s and will have responsibility for protecting and improving the health of the Irish population within the assigned geographic area. Working with and reporting to the National Director of Public Health, the Area Director of Public Health will provide strategic and clinical leadership to modernise, enhance and reform the delivery of Public Health services and develop a shared vision and strategy for the function. Each Area Director of Public Health will also provide operational management to their assigned HSE Public Health Area and be accountable for the end to end delivery of a high quality, standardised and consistent service aligned to the National Service Plan. The appointed candidates will be employed as a Medical Consultant and must be registered as a Specialist with the Irish Medical Council in the Specialty of Public Health Medicine within 180 days of interview.
