Director of Public Health

Job description

Norfolk is a county with a unique combination of coastal, rural and urban communities. A geographically large county, it has a population of over 920,000 and due to its varied and beautiful characteristics, receives many visitors all year round.
As our new Director of Public Health at Norfolk County Council, you’ll lead improvements for better health and wellbeing for our residents and visitors. You’ll target and make tangible progress in addressing our most challenging health inequalities and have a strong motivation to work in partnership to across our system to lead and improve health outcomes and protect our communities from public health hazards.
Reporting directly to the Director of Adult Social Services (DASS), you will hold a significant corporate and system role and will have direct access to the Chief Executive. You will provide expert advice and guidance to the Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, our Executive Leadership Team, senior managers and elected members and work with partners across the public, private, and voluntary sectors, driving forward a broad range of health improvement programmes. As DPH you will play a key role in driving prevention and health inequalities actions with our Integrated Care Board partners and across our system.

You’ll be leading the strategic development, implementation, and delivery of our public health agenda and deliver on our key responsibilities - high quality, value for money services with customer-focused outcomes.
We think the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Strategic vision and leadership skills
  • Track record of galvanising partners around a clear public health vision in line with organisational and political vision and that meets Government policy
  • Ability to lead and develop effective public health teams so the Council fulfil its leadership role in health improvement, alongside its full range of public health responsibilities
  • Proven track record of working with system partners to improve population level health and wellbeing, reduce health inequalities and improve the quality and access to services by communities and individuals
  • An ability to lead and shape prevention approaches and interventions which deliver tangible results for people and communities
  • Experience of working in the public sector and political environment supporting and advising Elected Members.
