Are you looking for a great start to your career in Public Health? Then we have a fantastic opportunity to join our team, train in public health, attain a degree and achieve Public Health Practitioner status on the UK Public Health Register.

We are a vibrant and award-winning Public Health team within Devon County Council, committed to making a difference to the health and wellbeing of our residents, reducing health inequalities and enabling people to live healthy lives. In this role you would be supported to work across a wide range of public health areas, in addition to working with other local authority health and community partners.
Here’s what you can expect to be doing
This is a 3 year apprenticeship training programme to become a Public Health Practitioner.  For 20% of your time, you will be supported by the University of the West of England to undertake a BSc in Public Health (Hons).  The programme is delivered through online webinars and tutorials, with remote support.  When completed, you will be able to apply to and join the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) which is a recognised professional accreditation.  For 80% of your time, you will be supported to work on a variety of programme areas within the public health team, in line with the learning on the degree programme.  This will involve helping our team to plan, deliver and evaluate public health initiatives, working across the three domains of public health:

  • Health Improvement
  • Health Protection
  • Healthcare Public Health
  •  
    You will be managed by a senior colleague in Public Health and will join a positive and supportive working environment with regular supervision.
    About you
    We are looking for someone who is willing to learn, is a good team worker, is non-judgemental, has patience, is reliable and trustworthy. We are seeking someone who is interested and keen to make a difference in public health and wants to develop their knowledge to benefit the population of Devon.
    You will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work as part of a team as well as working on own initiative.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with others in a concise and effective manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Practical approach to problem solving
  • Ability to organise your own workload to deliver to targets and deadlines.
  • Ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English
  • Entry requirements for the position:

    Applicants must not already have a Degree or Masters qualification or be working towards Public Health Practitioner status on the UK Public Health Register.
    For all applicants, Grade C/4 or above in English Language and Grade C/4 or above in maths, or equivalent is required.  Please ensure you list your GCSEs on your application form.
