Our Maternity services at Northampton General Hospital, include:

  • A modern alongside 3 bed Birth Centre with birthing pools and 8 postnatal beds
  • 9 bed consultant-led Labour Ward with a birthing pool
  • A dedicated Obstetric theatre with recovery
  • 13 bed Maternity Higher Observation Ward
  • A dedicated triage, based on Labour Ward
  • A Bereavement Suite with garden
  • A Maternity Day Unit, an Outpatient Clinic and Midwifery-led Sonography services
  • 17 bedded ward for inpatient antenatal and postnatal mothers and babies
    Main duties of the job
    The Public Health Specialist Midwife will provide visible leadership and evidence-based information and education to birthing person and their families, and health professionals, in line with Trust policies and current public health guidance.
    The post holder will work in partnership with service users, the multi-disciplinary team, and local stakeholders to improve and protect health and wellbeing, improve the health of pregnant birthing person and their families through building knowledge, skills and confidence that lead to greater understanding of the need to take action to tackle lifestyle behaviours that have a negative impact on the health of the mother and infant.
    The Local Maternity Neonatal System (LMNS) is taking action to reduce risk for the family and other families and to identify trends locally and nationally and learn from them to improve health by tackling maternal obesity and smoking in pregnancy; both modifiable lifestyle risk factors that can increase the likelihood for stillbirth, preterm birth, low birthweight, and neonatal death.
